With continuous advancements in autonomous vehicle technology we are headed towards a Driverless Destiny! What does this mean and how will we do it?
An autonomous vehicle is one that is capable of sensing its environment and navigating without input from a driver. They are often referred to as driverless cars, self-driving cars and robotic cars too.
There are many benefits to driverless cars which we can all look forward to. Safety on the road is preeminent as it will be significantly increased by removing the human (e.g. error prone) element from driving. These safety improvements include a reduction in accidents caused by distracted driving, drunk driving, etc. Because the roads would be become safer with fewer accidents, two secondary benefits appear – reduced traffic and reduced costs.
Think of all the times you have been stuck in traffic due to an accident caused by human error. In a completely driverless environment, these situations would be reduced to anomalies rather than weekly events. Traffic jams due to inefficient driving by humans – too many fluctuations in speed – will be solved with autonomous vehicles as well (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L45HwjzMu0g). This means we will be able to reach our destinations faster with less risk.
With reduced accidents and traffic comes many reduced costs too. Insurance rates for drivers should go down. Infrastructure costs to maintain the roads can be reduced too.
